I think a possible theme for this book is that before anyone judges someone, they should understand the person better. I found this as a possible theme because when Chet, Bryce’s grandfather, talks to Julie, he says, “look at what’s really there,” (113). He also says “only with people it’s sometimes that the whole is less than the sum,” (110). Another theme I see emerging is that some people do not see well enough of a person, and they think of them as someone else. I found this as a possible theme because when Chet talks about his wife, he says “ It’s easy to look back and see it, and it’s easy to give the advice, but the sad fact is, most people don’t look beneath the surface until it’s too late,” (112).
Possible themes I see emerging are that Bryce and Juli have different stories about all their experiences together. Juli’s are about how Bryce always seemed friendly and nice to her, and sometimes, seemed to like her. Juli also described that Bryce was always like that, even when she didn’t really know him. Bryce’s are very different. Bryce’s are about how Juli always chased after him and forced a friendship upon him, one that he wasn’t about to become friendly with. Bryce also described how Juli “didn’t just barge her way into my life, she barged and shoved and wedged her way into my life.” (1) Even though they both have different experiences and sides of the same story, the sides might just “flip."
One of the themes I thought of for this book is, ‘Don’t ever judge a book by its cover’. I thought of that one because the book doesn’t talk about what the cover shows you. It does talk about chickens for a part of the book but the word Flipped does have to do with anything in the story that you would think of it being about. The narrator of the story does flip. It goes from Bryce to Julianna.
A possible theme I see emerging is don't judge a book by it's cover. I say this because Bryce judges Juli as soon as he sees her and Juli falls in love with him as soon as she sees him. They never really get to know eachother. Bryce thinks that Juli is a crazy, annoying little girl and has only seen that side of her. Juli just thinks that Bryce is a really nice person. But do they really know eachother?
A poosible theme I see emerging is to look past the outside and always try to see what's on the inside, because there may be a different person that wasn't directly found at first. Julianna and Bryce have not have a real conversation. So they are just playing along on what they think of each other by the actions they do. Chet was talking to Julianna and said,“It’s easy to look back and see it, and it’s easy to give the advice, but the sad fact is, most people don’t look beneath the surface until it’s too late” (112).
One possible theme that might be developing in this book is love will find its way. Juli and Bryce are spending more time together and they are developing feelings for each other. Even though at first Juli really liked Bryce and he didn’t like Juli at all, he is starting to develop feelings for her. As soon as Juli sees him, she falls in love with him but Bryce doesn’t like her that way. Well really, no way at all. He thinks that she is weird and a stalker and just plain creepy. Overtime, they develop feelings for each other.
You can't possibly hide your love for someone, I think this could be a theme because Juli is ignoring Bryce but he starts liking her anyways. On page 87 and 88 Bryce finally apologizes to Juli and she forgives him. Later that night he goes home and starts reading the paper Chet gave to him about Juli, and he can’t stop looking at her picture, he’s falling for her (98 and 99).
A possible theme could be don’t judge a book by its cover. I think that Juli thought that Bryce was perfect from the beginning, because of his gorgeous eyes and his watermelon-scented hair. Once she talked to Bryce’s grandpa about Bryce, things changed in Juli’s eyes. Juli realized that Bryce didn’t appreciate her. Through Bryce’s eyes, from the beginning Juli was a freak. She was obsessed with Bryce. Bryce realized that ever since Juli was in the paper, he discovered her unique qualities. I think don’t judge a book by its cover is a perfect theme, because judging each other was exactly what Bryce and Juli did.
